Resonance control!

What fascinated me as a kid about turntables was that they gave a sound even without electricity. I opened the dustcover, put the needle in the groove and spun the record with my hand. There was sound. Thin, dull, but sound. Because the turntable and the dustcover resonated, moving the air and so producing a sound. For high fidelity that's a bad thing. If you get that effect from your turntable there's room for improvement. You find lots of info about resonance control elsewhere (sorry....). If you don't know where to start use a mechanics stethoscope, play a record with amps turned off and listen at what spots of your turntable you get the most sound. If you don't want to buy a stethoscope use a screwdriver, put the handle on your ear and the tip on the turntable. Most sound -> most resonance.
